Pretty interesting, a bit on the heavy end… not the best documentary we’ve seen… but growing up in LA, it brought back a lot of memories.. anyways… long story short… Gangsters are dangerous people that can make their 501’s stand on its on with starch and an iron..

FROM: www.pinoyblog.com

The hip sound of Jazz Nouveau hits Manila as Soul Experiment Production presents ESPERANZA SPALDING LIVE at Sofitel Philippine Plaza on Saturday, August 15, 2009 beginning at 7PM. Before that, spend the day with this jazz prodigy in a special brass clinic that begins at 3PM at the Siete Picados of Sofitel Philippine Plaza.

Esperanza Spalding has been impressing jazz lovers since an early age. Her name, “esperanza” or “hope” has inspired her to be described as the “hope for the future of jazz and instrumentals (The Canadian Gazette)”. Audiences are continually drawn to this musical prodigy’s show-stopping, magnetic charisma on stage.

An alumna of Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA., at 23 Esperanza became the youngest professor in the school’s history. Her sultry, soulful vocals and skillful command of the bass has recently earned her an invitation to the White House. She is one of the few artists who have been asked to perform for President Obama since he stepped into office. She continues to captivate audiences all over the world with her “irresistible performances (Seattle Times)” and she is bound to capture the hearts and ears of Filipino jazz lovers during her visit to the Philippines.

Opening for Esperanza is YOSHA, a group composed of four gifted young artists: lead vocalist Yosha, bassist Karel Honasan (a Berklee alumnus), drummer Mike Alba, and keyboardist Nikko Rivera. Theirs is a unique jazz sound with a dash of Pinoy soul that is rapidly gaining popularity in the local jazz scene. Their original compositions are full of insightful lyrics coupled with unforgettable arrangements that are constant crowd-drawers– a perfect match for Esperanza’s performance.

Witness this one night only performance from the most anticipated artist in jazz today, Esperanza Spalding LIVE at the Sunset Pavilion of the Hotel Sofitel Manila in Pasay City. Tickets sold at 3,000.00 and 1,500.00php. For inquiries and ticket reservations call Ticketworld at 8919999 or 09293715650

Is this song not about money because of the recession in the US? Is that why it’s about food?

As a frequenter to facebook and all of my friends and friends’ friends’ photos, I noticed that everyone has at least one jumping on a hotel bed photo.  Like this one, from a friends’ friend who just went to Sonar Festival in Barcelona.

Then I went to The Fader blog and saw this dude bro.

MS PRESENTS | FILM SCREENING “CRIPS AND BLOODS: MADE IN AMERICA”

9:30 pmto11:30 pm

Massive Selector Asia and Bunker are proud to present a screening of Crips and Bloods: Made In America. Be sure to head out to Bunker to check this film out… Not only are we showing the problem with gangs, but also the spirit of independent film making by legendary skateboarder and film maverick, Stacy Peralta.

crips and bloods movie

Directed by critically acclaimed documentary filmmaker Stacy Peralta and Executive Produced by NBA star Baron Davis and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Stephen Luczo, CRIPS AND BLOODS: MADE IN AMERICA tells the story of the Crips and Bloods, South Los Angeles’ two most infamous African-American gangs.

Combining unprecedented access into the worlds of active gangs, CRIPS AND BLOODS: MADE IN AMERICA offers a compelling, character-driven documentary narrative which chronicles the decades-long cycle of destruction and despair that defines modern gang culture.

The shocking war-zone reality of the South LA Gangs, the Crips and the Bloods.

From the genesis of LA’s gang culture to the shocking, war-zone reality of daily life in the South L.A., the film chronicles the rise of the Crips and Bloods, tracing the origins of their bloody four-decades long feud. Contemporary and former gang members offer their street-level testimony that provides the film with a stark portrait of modern-day gang life: the turf wars and territorialism, the inter-gang hierarchy and family structure, the rules of behavior, the culture of guns, death and dishonor.

Ex-gang members of the Crips and Bloods, gang intervention experts, activists and academics talk.

Throughout the film ex-gang members, gang intervention experts, writers, activists and academics analyze many of the issues that contribute to South LA’s malaise: the erosion of identity that fuels the self-perpetuating legacy of black self-hatred, the disappearance of the African-American father and an almost pervasive prison culture in which today one out of every four black men will be imprisoned at some point in his life.

Solution to the South LA gang problem.

Finally the gang members themselves articulate their enduring dream of a better life. They provide CRIPS AND BLOODS: MADE IN AMERICA with its ultimate statement: a message of hope and a cautionary tale of redemption aimed at saving the lives of a new generation of kids, not just in South LA but anywhere in the world that gang violence exists.
